This week’s boutique spotlight is on the eclectic The Swap, a designer consignment shop with two separate locations on Maple and Magazine streets. This store is filled with hundreds of unique finds from all sorts of high end brands like Theory, Vince, Diane Von Furstenberg, and even Gucci. Each item is unique and on trend, making it the perfect spot for a true fashionista.
Michelle Reinhardt, the owner, opened the boutique in 2008. She was born and raised in Metairie and started off with a career in Education and IT. Fresh out of college, she moved to Phoenix and shortly realized she could not afford to build up her new corporate wardrobe. So, she turned to consignment stores and found that she could find all of her favorite higher-end brands for an affordable price. When she moved back to NOLA many years later, juggling a demanding job and raising kids, she decided she needed a more light and fun career. She knew New Orleans didn’t have any consignment stores that catered to the high-end contemporary client, so opening The Swap seemed like the perfect fit.
At first glance, the Swap may seem like it caters to more of an older client, but it is a perfect store for all of us Tulane students. Michelle sees that Tulane kids know their brands and appreciate current trends—we are savvy shoppers. At Swap, they can get their favorite designers for 50%-80% off traditional retail prices, making high-end fashion is accessible and affordable for them. The Swap also has such a wide range of merchandise. They could pick up a casual pair of Rag and Bone Jeans with a James Perse T-shirt for a Sunday brunch, a DVF or BCBG dress for a sorority event, or even a great Lululemon top for an afternoon at Reily. Many students also shop with their parents on breaks to get special gifts like a David Yurman ring or Rebecca Minkoff bag.
What really makes the Swap different from any other boutique in NOLA is the culture and store experience. They handpick every item, so the store is an edited collection of the best closets in the city. There is no overwhelming digging, and every item is in exceptional condition. They connect on a personal level with all of their clients and offer to help style them.
From my personal experience working at The Swap, I can guarantee you that you will find amazing pieces that will add a unique twist to your wardrobe and always be treated with the best service and styling advice. Come in and check it out, and mention our article for 15% off your next purchase!
