“The sweetest melody knows it could never compete, I’ve tried, I’ll keep trying” sang by Emma Stone, in her new song titled ‘Porch song’. Stone, a Tulane Sophomore, has just released her first song, surpassing a thousand streams just days after her release. She has been involved with music since the age of 10, starting on the piano, then joining bands and learning to play the guitar. As I listened to her song, I became fascinated with the lyrics and their deeper underlying meaning. Those that know Emma can attest to her talent, and this new release is a gateway to her future career.
I was curious what the meaning behind the “Porch Song” was and why Stone decided to give it such a unique title. When I asked, she told me she “wrote the entire song as she sat on her porch”. Stone “took everything she was feeling and made that into a sound”. When listening to the song now, Stone is reminded of her safe place, which “is an extremely magical feeling. The song is how it feels to sit on {her} porch, which was exactly what {she} was trying to do”.
Stone shared that growing up, her porch served as the platform to showcase nature’s beauty. When Stone is on her porch, she “feels like {she’s} in a little bubble of beauty, joy, happiness, and appreciation”; this is what she wanted her audience to feel like as well, while listening to her song. She continues to comment on the many beautiful things she notices about the earth, as “the beauty of nature and and the beauty of music” is what resonates most with Stone.
Releasing a song in college can result in nervous butterflies and vulnerable feelings; Stone has had numerous sleepless nights, tossing and turning, while anxiously waiting to see how her audience will react to her music. However, she explained that “if it makes at least one person feel good, then I am happy”. Stone shared that this has been her dream for so long; “it’s a very valient and beautiful thing to put music into the world, and I am so happy to have been able to do that.”
For those who have listened to “Porch Song”, one can attest to it’s peaceful melody Emma hopes this song will make her listeners “appreciate the music that is intrinsic and already present in the world and in nature” just as if they too are sitting on the porch, listening to the birds chirping and the breeze go by.
To listen to “Porch Song”, you can stream it on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, and Youtube. You know what to do.
