It feels like every season, there’s a new color trend that dominates. Scrolling through your Instagram feed, picture after picture depicts girls and guys flaunting the latest color trends. Today, on and off the runway, suddenly everyone is wearing yellow or gingham, bright red or stripes. This past spring and summer season, shades of yellow made their mark from mustard hues to the more vibrant canary. Yellow has become the “it” color of this past season, and with its warm earthy tones, mustard serves as the perfect transitional shade going into the fall and winter season.
This fall season, the runway has been overtaken by hues of darker yellow. From trench coats to frocks, chunky knits to boots and blazers, it seems as though it is the age of yellow, and the electric color is here to stay. Designers like Oscar de la Renta, Kate Spade New York, Brandon Maxwell, Lela Rose and Self-Portrait have all sent yellow down their runways.
Intrigued by the runway and interested in incorporating this seasons’ it color into your own wardrobe? If you’re eager to hop on the bright and sunny trend, but unsure how to incorporate this happy hue into your rotation of groutfits, try starting small with a pair of chunky earrings or yellow sandals first. Adding color into your wardrobe can feel daunting, but opting for delicate accessories or a comfy cardigan can brighten your look while still easing into the trend. If you’re feeling more bold, a pair of sassy yellow mules or a fierce mustard frock will make a statement and inspire you to strut around campus.
Aside from being just a trend, yellow’s potential stretches far more than just a pop of color. As a busy college student, I often find myself either tired or stressed, or some combination of the two. With my mind and efforts focused on due dates and deadlines, my love of fashion usually ends up taking a backseat, as I choose comfort over style when rolling out of bed to make it on time to my 8 am. It becomes too easy to fall into a routine of sweats and darker colors. However, incorporating playful colors, like this trendy yellow, into your daily wardrobe can have hugely positive effects on your confidence and self-image. The days I’ve woken up and slipped on a cute mustard graphic tee, or chucked on my favorite yellow shoes for a brunch with the girls, my daily attitude drastically improved. The happy color put a smile on my face and a pep in my step.
From warm wooly sweaters, to chunky earrings and stylish sneaks, the options are limitless. So try incorporating a little yellow (and a little sunshine) into your outfit this upcoming fall season and strut around like Cher Horowitz would want you to.
