As autumn leaves turn and pumpkin spice lattes make their seasonal comeback, it is time to revive your wardrobe with a timeless staple that will commence your return to the season. Denim, one of fashion’s most versatile fabrics, can effortlessly elevate your fall looks–whether it’s already in your closet or on your wishlist! From classic light-wash jeans to chic jackets and playful mini skirts, denim will be your best friend this season. Let’s dive into how you can spice up your fall wardrobe with denim pieces you may already own.

Boot Cut Revival

A good pair of jeans is a classic for a reason, and everyone has that one beloved, overworn pair tucked away in their closet. As brisk weather quickly approaches, how can we refresh the same jeans we lived in last summer? Fashion trends in 2024 have changed faster than the weather, from baggy silhouettes to the “quiet luxury” wave. We have seen the baggy jeans paired with a tiny top combo for a while now, so let’s use the turning seasons as inspiration for a moment of change. While this pairing isn’t necessarily out of style, try an oversized top and a tighter pair of jeans instead. Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves–skinny jeans haven’t fully made a comeback, and in my humble opinion, rightfully so. Instead, a more tasteful straight-leg jean is having its moment!

Fall denim in 2024 is all about reimagining timeless fashion and playing with proportions. Look towards classic brands like Levis, whose Wedgie Boot Cut Women Jeans offer a chic silhouette that pairs perfectly with the Aritzia Contour Square Neck Cami Top and the Lioness Kenny Bomber (see Look 1). A little birdy even told me Canadian Tuxedos are back. For a simple yet refined take on denim-on-denim, try Free People’s We The Free Cowboy Flare Jeans paired with the TankAir Cap Sleeve Baby Tee and Reformation’s Brooks Oversized Jacket (see Look 2).

Elegance Is The New Casual

Streetwear has taken an elegant turn following the internet’s summer obsession with Sofia Richie Grainge. More structured denim with a classier, more professional edge is entering the scene. While the “office siren” trend has emerged over the past year, thoughtfully emulating it in your day-to-day college style can be challenging to sustain. To mirror a similar sense of sophistication while maintaining comfort, opt for the Aritzia 90s Iggy Lo-Rise Baggy Jeans with a high-neck top such as the Aritzia’s Smooth Matter™ Tower Top. Tie it all together with this season’s trendiest footwear: the Frye Boot (see Look 3).

Club Classics

Now that Brat Summer is officially out, Brat Fall is in! As we transition into the new Brat season, it’s time to experiment with patterns and textures on your nights out. With the rise of animal print, cheetah has dominated our FYPs, mood boards, and closets this past year. Regardless, we’re taking the trend with us into the fall because animal print is never out. Bear in mind this fall is about balancing statement pieces with a flair of sleek casualness. Channel the Brat Fall look with Revice’s TLC Wild One zebra print jeans, Are You Am I’s Sunniva Corset, and Dolce Vita’s Gyra Boots (see Look 4).

If you’re feeling extra bold and want to dip into the revival of metallics, make a statement with the Zara Wide Leg Foil Jeans. Complement the jeans with understated pieces such as the Tony Blanco Sadie Heel and the TankAir Spill Halter (see Look 5).

For those looking to try a different silhouette, Free People’s We The Free Firecracker Flare Jean offers a playful surprise on a classic cut. You could style them with the Miaou Enzo Top and Prada Heeled Leather Sandals (see Look 6). Denim’s versatility allows for a seamless transition from daytime spent in class to nighttime spent hitting the clubs with friends.

Complete it with a Belt

There’s no better way to accessorize a pair of jeans than with a good belt. A statement belt can transform your old pair of jeans into something nuanced, adding flair and function. Select a bold, oversized belt and elevate any ordinary outfit. I adore Jaded London’s Starstud Belt, which can be the base for building the perfect festival look. I would pair this eye-catching piece with a light-wash denim mini skirt such as Motel Rock’s Raw Hem Denim Skirt, and I Am Gia’s Faunda Bandeau Top. To complement the Western and Indie Sleaze appeal of the belt, I would opt for Steve Madden’s Riggs Banana Leather Boot (see Look 7).

Try Urban Outfitters’ Bonnie Studded Wide Tie Belt for something more casual. When paired with Lucky Brand’s Low-Rise Flare jeans and Skim’s Cotton Jersey Cami, the Bonnie Belt completes any everyday outfit, adding Boho elements for an elevated style (see Look 8). Never underestimate the power of a bold belt!

As we embrace the return of brown leaves and cozy sweaters, denim remains the staple in our wardrobes that never goes out of style. Whether you’re headed to class, the office, running errands, or a night out with friends, let denim be your go-to. Be bold, get creative, and play around with the versatility that denim can bring to your fall wardrobe!
