From Hip-Hop to Fashion: Inspiration From Your Favorite Rappers

When you think of your favorite rapper, you probably think about your favorite song by them. Some people might strive to be like their favorite rapper, seeing them as a role model, whether it be because of their personality or their musical talent. Some people might aim to be just as stylish as their favorite rapper. Rapper style has evolved tremendously over the last two decades, with oversized and baggy clothing becoming a thing of the past. As fashion continues to progress, rappers are keeping up with the trends just as much as anyone else.

Many people are afraid to step out of their comfort zone when it comes to clothes, in fear of receiving confusing looks and judgmental comments about their outfit. But what if you were able to tell people that the outfit you are wearing was worn by none other than A$AP Rocky? Certain artists are usually attributed with being the most fashionable, like Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Lil Yachty, and Lil Pump. Today’s most popular artists are also today’s biggest fashion icons.

In the last two years, Lil Yachty has made tremendous progress as a rapper. With singles such as “One Night” and “Broccoli,” it’s no surprise that Lil Yachty is well-liked by the hip-hop community. You might not have known that Lil Yachty also has a passion for fashion. Lil Yachty can be seen wearing well-known brands like Moschino, Louis Vuitton, Stone Island, and Nautica. His collaboration with Nautica has allowed fans to realize how much fashion is intertwined into rappers’ careers and persona.

Many rappers look to each other for inspiration on what to wear. A$AP Rocky has been acclaimed for his ability to pull off a street goth look, but also a high fashion look. There is no telling what A$AP will wear on any given day. One day you might find in a Gucci two-piece suit, which he wore to the amfAR Gala in 2017, or dressed down in a simple Supreme T-shirt and Air Jordans, which he wore which he performed at the BET awards back in 2013. A$AP Rocky is no doubt a role model for other popular artists who aim to achieve that balance of a streetwear and high-fashion look.

Lil Uzi Vert is another rapper whose fashion sense is often overlooked. Lil Uzi Vert is one of the most successful rap artists in the past year after his single “XO Tour Llif3” went 5x platinum. Lil Uzi is unique; he doesn’t just throw on a Supreme T-shirt with an expensive pair of Air Jordans and call it a day. He takes things to a new dimension, combining streetwear, high-fashion, and a rock star look. Although a rapper, he combines modern day rap with rock and emo to create a sound that differs from typical hip-hop. His music and style go hand-in-hand, as we often see him rocking leather jackets with a ton of jewelry, specifically iced out chokers. He often wears all black, taking inspiration from his role model, Marilyn Manson, an extremely well-known rock star. Lil Uzi Vert’s style is one of the most interesting among rappers in this day and age.

Why do we look up to rap artists for style advice? Well, it’s simple. Notable designers are reaching out more and more to rappers to act as ambassadors for their brands. Nautica, GUESS, Alexander Wang, and Calvin Klein are just a few of the brands that have called upon rappers like Lil Yachty, A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd, and Young Thug to rock their clothing for their magazines and campaigns. Although they might duck and cover up their faces when a hundred cameras are in their faces, deep down rappers want their outfits to be spoken about and representative of their music.

So, if you ever need a role model to help you dress well, look no further than the artists on your favorite playlist. If you listen closely, you might just hear your favorite artist sing about Saint Laurent (21 Savage, hint hint) or another big-name brand.
