This summer was an exciting time for album drops, and the fall shows no signs of stopping that momentum. Here are my picks for the biggest albums to look out for in the coming months.

1. Tha Carter V–Lil Wayne

After settling his court case with Birdman in June for a reported eight figures, Lil Wayne has control over his career again. Now that Young Money and Cash Money records have disbanded their partnership, Wayne has permission to release his Tha Carter V album. The record has been done since 2014, but Wayne was unable to release it due to Birdman having control over it. While the official date is still pending, Wayne has begun marketing the record again. The release date is rumored for September 21st, but Wayne’s team has not yet confirmed this. Tha Carter V will be Wayne’s first album in seven years. It reportedly has features from Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Eminem, The Game, and more.

2. Iridescence–Brockhampton

Brockhampton blew up out of nowhere last year, and since then, the “boy band” has inked a $15 million deal with RCA. However, the group had to reconsolidate after removing member Ameer Vann due to numerous sexual abuse and misconduct allegations. This halted the release of their first major label album and paused their run of constant touring. But the wait is over, and the group has announced that they will release their new record Iridescence this month. They will likely go on tour following the release of the album, picking up right where they left off.

3. Oxnard–Anderson .Paak

The multi-talented Anderson .Paak is making his return to hip-hop this fall with his new record Oxnard. Oxnard is rumored to have collaborations with legendary producers such as Dr. Dre and Madlib. Paak has provided little information about his album, but he has compared it to Jay Z’s Blueprint and Kanye’s College Dropout. Both of these records are hip-hop staples, so Paak is setting the bar high, to say the least. Paak’s last release was 2016’s smash “Malibu,” which put him on the map as one of the most promising up and coming rappers. He toured extensively in support of “Malibu,” but throughout 2018, he has remained quiet. His follow up to “Malibu” will be one of hip-hop’s most anticipated releases slated for the second half of the year.

4. TBA—Childish Gambino

Donald Glover is arguably the hottest person in Hollywood right now. His show Atlanta is a huge hit, and he had one of hottest singles of 2017 with “This is America.” Glover is claiming that his new album, which does not have an official name yet, will be his final record under his Childish Gambino moniker. If that turns out to be true, Glover will be walking away on a very high note. He has been booked as a festival headliner across the globe and has risen to the top tier in hip-hop. He has released two tracks,“Summertime Magic” and “This is America,” both of which are expected to be on the album. Both songs have received acclaim, adding further to the hype around Glover. His fall tour has already started, so it would make sense to assume that if he is putting out an album, it is in the final stages.
