If you’re anything like me, the past week or two of tanning weather in NOLA has brought tremendous amounts of serotonin into my life. That feeling of being sweetly sunkissed is one that I have welcomed back with open arms.
With spring break less than a month away, I’m getting excited and I bet you are too. Whether you’ll be sprawling out in a swimsuit, spending time with family and friends, or going on an adventure, you’ll need to have a few essentials with you. The flowers on campus have bloomed, and my winter puffer has been stowed. Spring has sprung — and I’m smiling just thinking about it. Here’s what you’ll need for vacay season.

First, a good hat. Light, natural colors are in — and so is texture. A raffia or straw hat is guaranteed to prevent sunburns and level up any outfit. Throw it on your head, in your bag, or in the backseat of the car and you’re good to go for a day outdoors. Personally, catch me sporting a western hat on the beautiful beaches of California this spring break.

Next, some charming little sunnies. Emphasis on little — the smaller, the more in vogue. Think early ‘90s ovals, slim rectangles, and Y2K colored lenses. The window into the soul is through the eyes, right? Frame your face with these cuties:

With the dynamic duo of heat and humidity, light and breezy clothes are a must. The breezier, the better. I’m loving linen and 100% cotton-based sets that feel soft to the touch and help me stay cool as temperatures rise. An even better option is a matching set that’ll make you look as effortless as you feel.

My next go-to is a comfy pair of slip-on shoes. Sandals and clogs that are easy to slip on will allow you to answer the call to adventure or make it to happy hour ASAP! Of course, we have the tried and true Birkenstock Boston’s which draw upon everyone’s earthy-crunchy side. And, hey, as an ode to the early 2000’s, give a platform shoe a try. The flirtier the flip flop, the better.

Alas, the most important part of vacation: the entertainment. For the crazy stuff, I’ll leave that up to you. For down time, though, nothing is better than a book you can’t tear yourself away from. Whether you want to dreamily get lost in a world of magic, an ancient time period, or a sultry romance, here are some of the hottest reads on Good Reads right now.
