Bruff Hacks: 7 Bruff Creations to Get You Through This Semester

As Tulane students, we have numerous options available to us for food, including the LBC, Le Gourmet, PJ’s Coffee, and Rimon at Hillel. In addition to all of these “fine-dining” locations, we also have the one and only Bruff dining hall. Let’s be honest, there are two types of Tulane students: those who “like it Bruff,” and those who will find any means possible to avoid dining hall food. But Bruff food canbe great it all depends on how you make it. In this article, I will present to you some basic Bruff food hacks that can turn any normal meal into a five-star dining experience.

The Classic Grilled Cheese

Let’s start off with a classic – the grilled cheese. Although making a grilled cheese may seem like second nature to some students, a surprising number of students never consider making one in Bruff Commons. The ingredients are simple; go to the deli section and ask for the bread and cheese of your choice (personally, I’m a sucker for classic white bread and American cheese). Then, just make your sandwich and place it in the panini press next to the salad bar. If you’re craving protein, add some steak or chicken. Pro hack: on Mondays, Bruff has avocado by the vegan bar, which is a great addition to any grilled cheese sandwich. Yum!

Fluffernutters

For those of you who have never heard of a fluffernutter, it is a sandwich containing peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, aka one of the best snacks to satisfy both your hunger and your sweet tooth. And luckily, you can make one at Bruff! All you need is some bread, a container of peanut butter, and marshmallows from the ice cream station. Combine the three, place the sandwich in the panini press, and enjoy your own homemade marshmallow fluff treat.

Hummus Bagel “Supreme”

You can never go wrong with a classic bagel with cream cheese, but sometimes it’s time to try something different. Next time you’re looking for a new lunch snack, try putting hummus on your bagel. Then, top it off with some tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions for a vegan bagel meal!

Fun-Filled Waffles:

Next time you’re looking for a way to jazz up your breakfast (or create a fancy new dessert), try filling your waffle mix with ingredients from the ice cream station. Add some Oreos and marshmallows for a delicious cookies and cream waffle mix. Or, just add some ice cream on top and voila -waffles a la mode!

Stir-Fry

When in doubt, mix everything together! There are many ways to make a yummy and innovative stir-fry. One recipe includes rice, veggies, chicken, and cheese; put it all in the microwave to melt the cheese and cook the veggies. Another way to make this dish is to substitute quinoa for rice and mix it up with some broccoli and cauliflower. Try adding some teriyaki or chili sauce from the vegan station for some extra flavor. Or, if you like it hot, try adding some tabasco for an extra kick!

Kale Salad

Aside from some sweet treats, there are also many ways to make healthy and/or vegan options with your Bruff ingredients. One of my favorites is a unique take on a kale salad; for this creation, combine hummus and lemon juice (you can usually find lemons near the drink section) to create a healthy and tasty dressing. Toss the kale in your dressing, and add chickpeas and beets from the salad bar. Top it off with a hard-boiled egg to make it the perfect nutrition-packed salad!

Milkshakes

City diner milkshakes are an amazing addition to any meal, but they can also turn into an expensive habit. The solution? Make milkshakes in Bruff! All you need is ice cream from the ice cream station, the mix-ins of your choice, a touch of milk, and the dedication to mix it all up yourself. No blender needed–just mix it up with a fork or spoon. Ta-da! A homemade milkshake.
