I admit that I, along with everyone else, have become a captive of the lip combo. No makeup look is truly complete without liner and gloss. It’s gotten to a point where I genuinely feel naked without my daily lip combo, and I know I’m not the only one. My day’s trajectory depends on whether I have the time to apply my lip combo that morning. Everywhere I look, I see someone sporting perfectly lined and glossed lips. Clearly, as a society, we have collectively agreed that lip combos are now standard practice. A truly universal enhancer, the right lip liner can be perfect for every skin tone, natural lip color, lip shape, you name it. There is no makeup look in which a lip combo can be considered unnecessary.

A dark lip combo with little to no makeup is an underrated look. The NYX Matte Lip Liner in “Club Hopper” (my personal favorite) is a beautifully unique purple-brown shade. With a shiny gloss layered on top, it is my go-to method for adding an air of chicness to any basic everyday outfit, consisting of baggy jeans, a minimalist tank, a messy bun, and a pair of glasses. This underrated combo maintains a sense of effortlessness thanks to the subdued nature of the rest of the outfit. A deeper hue may be bold, but you can rest assured that when you walk into a room, all eyes will gravitate towards your lips. Once I start getting braver within the realm of lip colors, I also plan on experimenting with red tones.

Though I revel in a dark lip from time to time, I tend to gravitate toward cool-toned browns. Lately, the NYX Lip Liner in the shade “Brown” has been my go-to. My trusty pencil is nearly worn down to the nub at the rate I’ve used it–which is often. It has graduated to a permanent member of my makeup routine. In fact, I don’t remember the last time I applied makeup without it. To top it off, I pair it with the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb in“Hot Chocolit” which blends seamlessly with the lip liner and my natural lip color. Imagine liner and gloss as two peas in a pod: these products were made for each other.

Among the iconic 90s trends resurfacing over the past few years, lip liner has proven to be no exception. A well-chosen lip combo serves as a timeless tool for adding dimension to the face and enhancing your natural lips. With endless variations of colors to choose from, there is a lip combo for everyone. Although they’re currently at peak trendiness, I think it’s safe to say it’s no fad. Consider this an official declaration: the lip combo is here to stay.
