The ‘90s called, and it wants its style back. Seriously, though; the similarities between what’s trending now and what was in fashion in the 1990s are striking. I interviewed my mom, Christine, on her own style in the 90s, and I found that I dress strikingly similar to the way she did. Trends are constantly cycling, and it’ll be interesting to see what gets our attention next. In the fashion world, what goes around always comes around.

How would you describe your style in the 1990s?

In the ‘90s, I was in my twenties. I would say I dressed with the trends of the time. Plaid skirts, sweaters, chunky shoes, tights, butterfly hair clips, bootleg jeans, lots of sneakers to match various outfits, slip dresses

Were there any celebrities/public figures that you looked up to for style inspiration?

There wasn’t really anyone I looked up to that much, but I did love Jennifer Aniston’s hair when Friends first started.

What TV shows or movies influenced your style the most?

I would say shows like Living Single, Friends, and Sex and the City. were probably the most influential for me and my friends.

What were some of your favorite brands/stores?

I shopped a lot at Jordan Marsh, Express, Gap, Macy’s, and The Limited.

What did you wear on a night out?

It depended on where we were going. If we were going to a club, probably jeans or black pants and a dressy shirt of some kind, I had a one-shoulder shirt that I loved. Maybe short shorts, maybe a skirt. Usually some kind of chunky boot or shoe until stilettos came into style. We mostly wore things you could dance in.

Did you have a specific clothing item that you couldn’t live without?

I LOVED a good sweatshirt. Still do!

What were the trends you loved the most?

Chunky platform shoes, capri pants, and track pants. We liked comfortable stuff more than anything else.

Hated the most?

I hated the pencil-thin eyebrows, as well as the low-rise jeans with the thong showing.

Did you ever thrift/second-hand shop?

No, thrifting for fun wasn’t really a huge thing when I was in my twenties.

Was there a particular item that everyone had to have?

There were a couple of things: overalls, choker necklaces, and flared jeans were super crucial to have.

What was your go-to hairstyle?

My go-to hairstyle was some version of a blonde bob or lots of layers for the majority of my twenties.

Are there any trends that you participated in that make you cringe now?

No, not really. I still like the majority of the things I wore when I was younger.
