Waking up at 8:00 AM for a mandatory service learning class isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of fun, especially when you have no say. Luckily, there’s a more engaging way to fulfill your Tier 2 service requirement at Tulane—and it might just be one of the best-kept secrets on campus. My fellow Tulane students, I’ve solved the puzzle of transforming our service obligation into an exciting internship adventure that fulfills graduation requirements and enhances your resume with valuable experience.

At Tulane, we’re encouraged to blend learning with real-world impact, the core idea behind the Tier 2 service requirement. It allows us to leave the classroom and positively impact the community. Many don’t realize this requirement can be fulfilled through internships during the semester. This approach doesn’t just help you tick off graduation requirements; it significantly boosts your resume with practical experience in your chosen field—a strategic move that is vastly underutilized.

Service-centered internships offer a unique dual benefit for those looking to combine service with career development. These opportunities allow you to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-world challenges, enhancing your skills and expanding your professional outlook. Tulane has numerous community partners offering internships, but you can find your own and go through a brief approval process to get credit. Accompanying these internships is a weekly seminar, which, if you take it from me, might be the most straightforward and most enjoyable class you’ll experience at Tulane. I would like to shine a light on an opportunity I strove for with Excite All Stars. The program is ideal for students of all majors who are interested in education and sports. Working with this organization fulfills service requirements and makes a meaningful impact on the lives of young people in New Orleans. While I don’t want to focus exclusively on Excite All Stars, their vibrant role in our community and their welcoming environment for interns are certainly worth mentioning.

If there’s one key takeaway from this, it’s the encouragement to explore the internship opportunities at Tulane. These internships are not just stepping stones toward graduation; they offer a chance to engage deeply with your field of interest and make meaningful contributions to the community. Why not choose this unique path to fulfill your service requirement? It’s an excellent way to enhance your college experience, stand out in a competitive job market, and add a valuable chapter to your professional development. So, why wait? Consider applying for an internship next fall semester and transform both your college journey and future career prospects.
