Down on Freret, there is a cafe that perfectly embodies the spirit of an old-school diner. Its vintage flooring, nostalgic decorations, and exquisite southern food ensure that the High Hat Cafe should top your bucket list of must-visit restaurants. Not to mention, it’s also under a mile from campus and open daily from 11am-9pm, making it very convenient.
For over 15 years, the joint has satisfied locals and travelers alike, and I am pleased to say that I am no different. My first impression upon walking up was that the cafe’s setting could have been from a TV show set in a small town. Then I smelled the food, and that’s when I knew I was in for a great experience.Â
All my research on the High Hat Cafe, coupled with the cartoon catfish mascot inside, made the choice of what to eat simple. I got the Fried Catfish basket. The food came out fast, but the speed of preparation did not reflect how good it truly was. The basket came with catfish, fries, hush puppies, slaw, and even pickles. The quality and quantity of food were excellent. In fact, I was so impressed that I even tried their slaw, a food that I typically ignore. I can happily confirm, I liked the slaw.Â
While I was completely full, I still felt the urge to order one more thing. What is a timeless diner experience without a slice of pie? When the waiter told me about the Chocolate Chess Pie, I knew I needed to try it. The pie is best described as a brownie crust on top with a fudge filling underneath. For someone who adores chocolate, this was an absolute no-brainer. Continuing with the trend, the High Hat Cafe did not disappoint with the slice of pie.

There were numerous other options that I would have loved to try. From friends and servers alike, I have heard that the fried chicken is incredible. I saw it briefly as it was delivered to a table, and it looked so good. I would also have loved to go on a weekend, as from 11:30-3pm, their specials include chicken and waffles, as well as cornmeal buttermilk pancakes. Also, the seasonal pies sounded so phenomenal, with a slice of Apple Cinnamon or Pecan Bread Pudding pie both sounding to die for.
