There are only so many times you can say, “What are we doing tonight?” before everyone ends up at the same place again. College routines get predictable fast. Class. Library. Coffee shop. Frat party. Repeat. And when you finally decide to do something fun, it somehow turns into the same night you’ve already had ten times this semester.

But while we’re stuck in our campus loops, there’s a full-blown NBA spectacle happening just a streetcar ride away. If you’re at Tulane and haven’t been to a Pelicans game yet, you’re missing out on one of the most electric, surprisingly unforgettable nights this city has to offer.

My Birthday Changed Everyone’s Mind

I am admittedly a Golden State Warriors fan and have always enjoyed basketball. For my birthday this year, my friends surprised our group with tickets to a Pelicans game against the Warriors.

Most of my friends are not basketball fans.

They do not follow basketball statistics and would not recognize Brandon Ingram. They attended for my birthday, but by the end of the night, everyone enjoyed the experience. It became one of the most memorable nights of the semester for all of us.

Sharing the excitement of a live game with friends, enjoying refreshments, and watching the action up close creates a unique atmosphere. The energy in the arena is contagious, and by the final minutes, you find yourself fully engaged with the crowd.

The experience was not about the outcome or being a dedicated fan.

It was simply enjoyable and allowed everyone to relax and be present.

Attending the game proved to be an effective way to manage stress.

It’s the Study Break You Actually Need

After hours of studying, attending a game provides a refreshing break.

Entering the Smoothie King Center, known locally as The Blender, you are greeted by bright lights, lively music, and an enthusiastic crowd.

For two hours, you can set aside academic pressures and enjoy time with friends while watching world-class athletes. This break can be beneficial for both your well-being and academic performance.

It’s Better Than the Same Night Out

A typical night out often results in unexpected expenses and little lasting enjoyment.

In contrast, attending a game offers a complete experience, with excitement, a lively crowd, and memorable moments to discuss afterward.

Additionally, tickets are more affordable than expected, especially with student discounts and the Pelicans’ underdog status.

You do not need to be a sports fan to enjoy the experience. Understanding every rule or following the standings is not required.

The crowd’s energy guides your reactions, and the scoreboard highlights key moments. Even those unfamiliar with basketball often become engaged by the end of the game.

Getting out of the Bubble

College life can feel insular, making it easy to overlook the vibrant city around you. At a Pelicans game, you join a diverse crowd and become part of the New Orleans community. If you are here for four years, it is worthwhile to experience it fully.

There is no expectation to become a dedicated fan or purchase team merchandise. Simply attend once to experience it.

Go when you’re tired of studying. Go when you’re bored with the same old frat parties and bar nights. Go for a birthday. Go because your friend drags you!

You may arrive expecting a typical basketball game, but you will leave with a memorable experience and perhaps a newfound appreciation for the Pelicans. Do not overlook this opportunity.
