For years, Netflix has been viewed as the potential death of Hollywood. The streaming conglomerate has been seen as a villain, slowly replacing movie theaters and studios. But now a new threat to Hollywood is emerging. Paramount’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. might represent a bigger shift. Although this may not be the death of Hollywood, there will be restructuring of the industry.

Warner Bros. has established itself as one of the most influential studios in modern entertainment. It has introduced film phenomenons such as the Harry Potter series, iconic tv shows like Friends and even news outlets like CNN. A bidding war for Warner Bros. began in late 2025, due to debt and pressure to consolidate power.

For months, Netflix seemed like the obvious winner of the bidding war, which would have accelerated the future of streaming. But shockingly, CEO of Paramount David Ellison outbid Netflix for Warner Bros. The question is no longer if streaming will take over Hollywood but what will happen now that Ellison holds significant power and control.

This merger carries political implications, as Ellison has publicly supported President Trump. This has sparked questions about the future of Warner-owned news outlets, including CNN, and whether their coverage will start to be right-leaning. If so, it could mark a shift toward greater right-wing influence over mainstream news. Popular media sources including The New York Times and The Guardian have expressed alarm that this could pose a threat to democracy. Specifically, there are growing concerns about how the acquisition might impact freedom of expression–something central to the entertainment industry.

At the same time, consolidation in Hollywood could have consequences behind the scenes. Now that there’s less competing studios, there could be potential layoffs and budget cuts for those employed in Hollywood. For students and recent graduates who are trying to break into the competitive industry, this increasing consolidation may make this path more difficult.

The potential death of Hollywood seems to have always been looming. Its downfall has been questioned for decades, from the rise of television, to streaming services, to recent writers strikes. However, Hollywood has proven that it does not go down easily. This industry keeps evolving.

The Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros. is a significant event in the industry’s history. The question that remains is what kind of industry will emerge from this shift.
