<p>Louisiana was called the “Hollywood of the South” until recently, when there was a $180 million cap placed on production tax incentives. This allowed films only up to a sixth of that amount in tax credits. This amount was nearly exhausted by 2016! Because of this, rather than filming in New Orleans or greater Louisiana, many film productions moved to Atlanta. Georgia is now the Southern location of choice for film productions.</p>
<p>Georgia has enjoyed millions of dollars that can benefit the state economy. The next time Louisiana lawmakers attempt to claim that taxpayers are being affected by production tax credits, they must remember the $270 million Marvel films like <em>Black Panther</em>. The film set their production in Georgia, and the state has benefited from the enormous revenue of the film.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, Louisiana has a bevy of amazing film and television productions released under its belt, many of which have been filmed in New Orleans and even at Tulane. Here are five film/TV productions recently released or filmed in and around New Orleans.</p>
<p><strong><em>Happy Death Day 2U</em></strong></p>

<p>Incorporating the same Deja Vu theme as the original, college student Tree Gelbman (Jessice Rothe) finds herself in the same college dorm she’s been reliving and lucky to be alive. This time, however, it’s Carter’s roommate, Ryan, that’s in danger. Recently released in February, this flick is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. The movie wrapped in May 2018 in New Orleans, with several scenes filmed on Loyola’s uptown campus.</p>
<p><strong><em>The Magicians</em></strong></p>

<p>This successful Syfy series is based on a group of students recruited to study magic at the fictional Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy. The viewers are introduced to the destructive forces of magic at play as the characters enter a completely new world filled with secrets and surprises. The Magicians airs on Wednesdays at 9/8c. Tulane’s uptown campus served as a filming location for the pilot episode.</p>
<p><strong><em>Power</em></strong></p>

<p>Starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this Netflix sci-fi thriller is about a body and mind-altering drug that affects each user in a different way. Gordon-Levitt plays a cop whose job is to get the drug off the streets, but soon realizes that he must take the drug in order to fight it. Production began last October in New Orleans.</p>
<p><strong><em>Billie </em></strong></p>

<p>This Lee Daniels biopic about legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday will be both tragic and inspiring. Her life, struggles, and influential work will be shown on the big screen. Details about the production are still under wraps, but Andra Day is set to star as Holiday, with Lakeith Stanfield to star alongside her as Billy Cole. Filming is set to begin in April in New Orleans.</p>
<p><strong><em>Tall Girl</em></strong></p>

<p>Six-foot-one newcomer Ava Michelle will star as the eponymous “Tall Girl” in this Netflix film. The film is about a high school student who is the tallest girl in school, making her uncomfortable and insecure in the process. The film is about struggle and self-acceptance in a period when everything seems uncertain.</p>
